THE WORK to improve the sea wall at Saltcoats near to the railway line has been further delayed with bad weather being cited as a key factor.
Network Rail this week confirmed that they are looking to have works finished by June on the 'vital' repairs at Seaview Road, which has seen the promenade from Saltcoats to Stevenston closed for a number of months.
The £6million improvement was announced last year but delays caused by storms over the winter period have caused further issues.
Network Rail have been infilling voids on the wall, installing rock armour protection, a wave return wall and a new surface along the length of the promenade.
The closure has been mooted to last as long as August but Network Rail hope that works will be finished before this.
A spokesperson said: "Works are on going and progressing well. We lost time over the winter period due to the weather and we are looking to get works finished in June. We apologies for any delays caused by the weather.
A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “We can confirm that the Council has extended the closure period at Saltcoats/Stevenston promenade until August at the request of Network Rail.
“Network Rail have indicated that bad weather and supply issues have hindered progress on their works, requiring the need for an extension.”
