HUNDREDS of fans descended on Winton Park this weekend to see Ardrossan Winton Rovers lift the West of Scotland Football League (WoSFL) Second Division title.

Amongst those fans was one face who is particularly well known, and who is no stranger to silverware himself.

Celtic legend and Lisbon Lion Bobby Lennox was in attendance at the match, in support of his grandson Zack Simpson.

Nearly 57 years on from lifting the European Cup with the Glasgow giants, Bobby, now aged 80, had the chance to get his hands on further silverware as he joined in the Winton Park celebrations.

The proud Saltcoats man, who of course has his very own statue on Countess Street, was in fine spirits as he took in the thrilling 5-4 Winton win that secured championship glory, with his grandson, who formerly played for Troon and Whitletts Vics, at the heart of the team.

Winton boss Gavin Friels, who is familiar with Lennox, having played with his son Gary at Dalry Thistle, was delighted to have the 80-year-old in attendance and to see him holding the league title won by his side.

Lennox is, of course, no stranger to silverware and won a record 24 top-class titles during his time at Celtic.

Friels commented: “It was great to have Bobby there, holding the league title after everything he’s won.

“It’s a great picture of him and Zack. It was great for the family to see him winning a league title.”
