TWO families had a frightening ordeal last Thursday after ash from a barbecue was still warm enough to cause a huge fire a full day later.

The McKellor family in Spiers Avenue, Beith had a barbecue on Wednesday to celebrate a birthday. At 7.30pm the next night, Sam McKellor cleaned the barbecue and tipped a small amount of ash into his empty bin.

Neighbour Martin Hynd said: 'I was in the house on Thursday with my wife Wendy and my year-old son Rhys.
