THE Rev Jim Smith, MBE, TD brought an era to an end this week when he retired from an Army chaplaincy that lasted just three months short of 27 years and took him all over the world including the bloody battle-zone of Kosovo and saw him receive one of Britain's major honours.

Throughout it all Colonel Smith - to give this Parachute Regiment Red Beret his full Territorial Army rank - has retained the likeability and approachability which have made him so popular with his congregation at the EU Congregational Church in Ardrossan and in the wider community.
