Stats show fatalities down by a quarter

TWO people lost their lives in house fires in North Ayrshire last year.

Across Strathclyde fire deaths fell by 23 per cent in 2008-09, dropping to 27 from 35 the previous year.

The figures came as part of the 2008-2009 Fatal Incident Analysis report presented by Brian Sweeney, the Chief Officer of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, to the Board of Strathclyde Fire & Rescue.

All of the 27 deaths occurred in the home, with the most common place in the house for fire deaths was the bedroom - ten deaths - followed by the kitchen - eight - and the lounge, where seven people died.

Mr Sweeney said: "Although this is a significant reduction, more has to be done to continue this downward trend."
