Waste graphite set for burial at Hunterston A?

MAGNOX North Ltd are carrying out a feasibility study at Hunterston A decommissioning site into an alternative way of dealing with waste graphite.

If the technology is shown to be feasible, its wider use could be considered at other sites.

The current plan is that Hunterston A waste graphite will be stored along with other intermediate-level radioactive waste in a specially constructed on-site store until a permanent deep geological disposal facility is completed - anticipated to be around 2040 - at a location still to be identified.
