ALMOST 100 pupils from schools across North Ayrshire have signed up for a programme in which they will provide support to younger pupils while strengthening their own leadership skills.
Over 80 pupils from North Ayrshire’s nine secondary schools pre-empted their return to school recently by taking part in workshops and training courses to become Active School Youth Leaders. The youngsters will be supporting and coaching younger pupils from both primary and secondary schools in a wide range of sports and activities which can range from the more traditional school sports to, for example, dancing and golf.
Becoming an Active School Youth Leader will allow pupils to gain vital reponsibility and skills that they can use in adulthood, and with 49 pupils taking part in the programme last year, this year’s intake shows a significant increase in the numbers of interested parties. The project also enhances social engagement by providing a fun environment and the opportunity to meet new friends from schools across the area.
