THE most invasive foreign plant in the UK has been found in Ardrossan and poses a potentially dire threat to nearby properties.
Japanese knotweed has been found growing on wasteland at the town’s Pavilion Place - close to the grounds of St Peter-in-Chains Church - and, if it spreads to neighbouring houses, could break through the concrete and pose major structural problems for homeowners.
The land - which has become unsightly and heavily overgrown - is owned by McLaughlin Construction, formerly of Ardrossan, now based in Irvine and is historically important to the town as it looks on to the ruins of Ardrossan Castle.
