ONE of our readers in Kilwinning made an astonishing find recently - a 117-year-old copy of the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald.

Although in an understandably fragile condition, the 40th anniversary edition of the paper - dated May 12, 1893 - is an entertaining, engaging and at times jaw-dropping read. Costing one penny at the time, the published motto of the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald was a Milton quote, reading: “Give me the liberty to know, to utter and to argue freely above all liberties.”

With whole sections devoted to arts and literature reviews and a lengthy list of curious and controversial adverts to be found, highlights include sections on health, the politics of the day, crime, debts and money lending.
