A bat of a mystery

WILDLIFE specialists were left scratching their heads recently after a nine-year-old Arran girl found a rare species of bat on the island that is not native to the UK.

Whiting Bay Primary School pupil Victoria Mowatt - who is a member of the local National Trust for Scotland Young Naturalists' Club - found the mystery bat a few months back in her garden. Noticing that the bat - which has now been identified as a 'parti-coloured bat' - was injured but still alive, the youngster enlisted the help of her family to capture the bat safely in a shoe box.
