Twins retire after 39 years

TWO long-serving twin sister teachers retired last week from two Saltcoats primary schools on the same day.

Teachers, pupils and parents were left fighting back the tears on the last day of the school year on Thursday when Pat Gartland waved goodbye to Caledonia Primary, while her twin sister Rose Reid was doing the same at neighbouring St Anthony's. Both starting their teaching careers in the 1970s in Saltcoats, the sisters - now aged 59 - decided to retire at the same time, with Pat having put in an impressive 39 years teaching and Rose just one year behind with 38 years' service.
