A CARNIVAL atmosphere, fans signing at the tops of their voices and an explosion of colour as the arrival of the teams was greeted with plumes of yellow and black smoke and flags and ticker tape on the away terracing while at the home end blue and white was everywhere.

Huge anticipation was in the air, Irvine Meadow were being quoted by the bookies at what seemed generous odds of 7-1 of pulling off the unthinkable and eliminating the third-placed side in the First Division, just two years after seeing off Second Division strugglers Arbroath. Worth a bet you might say.
