A West Kilbride schoolgirl plans to have over 10 inches cut off her hair to raise money for the Little Princess Trust, which provides wigs for children suffering with hair loss.
Leah Anderson, who goes to West Kilbride Primary, is getting her hair cut at Abundance Hair and Beauty in Saltcoats on May 7 and has so far raised over £100.
Mum Debbie Anderson, a project worker at Barnardo's, told the Herald: “She saw an article about six months ago on Facebook about a little girl who lost her hair through cancer treatment and thought it would be a lovely idea to donate her own hair to the Little Princess Trust. She said to me that her hair will grow back and she didn't need it all, but another little girl might need it.
“The last time Leah had her hair cut she was about five. It's down to her waist just now so when it's cut it will be just under her chin.
“She had been asking to do it for ages but I was a bit unsure because she's got lovely long blonde, wavy hair and I didn't want to see it getting cut off. But because she turns 10 on May 1, she thought she was old enough to do it. She's hoping to raise £350 as this is the amount a real hair wig costs to make.”
Through the Little Princess Trust, Leah's hair will be sent to a factory in China and blended with other hair donations before it is made into a wig.
Debbie added that Leah's siblings, Kelise, 15, and 19-year-old Jay, as well as dad James, were all supporting her.
