CHILDREN at St Bridget’s Nursery Class in Kilbirnie are hosting a Scots Assembly in memory of a former pupil who died of cancer before Christmas.
The kids will be performing poems and songs in Old Scots on Friday morning to celebrate being named Scottish Ambassadors by Education Scotland.
Proceeds from the event will go towards the Greig Steven Memorial, a charity in memory of a young Kilbirnie man who lost his battle with cancer last year.
Sarita Taggart, Senior Practitioner, at St Bridget’s Nursery, said: “We’re choosing that charity because he was a pupil here at the school and one of the nursery teachers Frances taught him and she’s still here. He was a big part of Kilbirnie and so it’s very close to all our hearts.”
Greig was just 25 when he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer in June 2015. Sadly, the cancer was inoperable and incurable and Greig passed away in November.
His family set up a charity in his memory to raise funds towards building a holiday home for people affected by cancer.
Sarita told the Herald that nursery staff were hoping to see over 100 people at Friday’s fundraiser, including parents and several VIPs.
She said: “The children are going to recite poems converted into Old Scots and there will be dancing too. Then we’ll all have a little tea afterwards and a chat.”
The Assembly is on Friday, April 29 at 9am. Tickets for the event are 50p and can be bought from the school or on the door. For more information, contact the school on 0505 683 293.
