Kilwinning pupils secured the top spots in a celebration of North Ayrshire’s school musical talent.

Leading musicians and singers from North Ayrshire’s secondary schools came together to battle it out at Garnock Community Campus on Tuesday night.

Competing for the titles of North Ayrshire Young Singer of the Year and North Ayrshire Young Musician of the Year, winners from heats held across all nine of the area’s secondary schools gathered to compete for the coveted top spots.

Dr Gordon Munro, Director of Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, acted as adjudicator on the night.

Scott Bryant of Kilwinning Academy was named Young Musician of the Year for his memorable renditions of the first movement of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Rode Caprice No. 2. Runners up were flutist Mollie Ford from Auchenharvie Academy and clarinettist Naomi Calley from Garnock Community Campus.

Winner of Young Singer of the Year was Kitty Tannock of Kilwinning Academy, who sang Only Us by Justin Paul & Benj Pasek and Get Out and Stay by Dolly Parton. Anne McCarron from Largs Academy and Hannah Watson from Garnock Community Campus took the runner up places.

Provost Ian Clarkson said: “Everyone who attended the event was absolutely blown away by the standard of work exhibited by this exceptional group of young singers and musicians.

“Their level of commitment shone through in each one of their quality performances, and every one of the finalists is a credit to themselves, their schools and their families.

“The talent of these young singers and musicians deserves the highest of praise, along with the support of their families and the outstanding work of the teachers and schools.”

The event was organised by North Ayrshire Council’s Music Services department and was sponsored by the Rhoda Reid Charitable Trust, which supports excellence in music education.
