Beith superstar Jemma Reekie will be looking to secure her spot on Team GB this weekend, ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.

The British Athletics Championships, which doubles as the Olympic trials, gets underway today, with the 23-year-old setting off in the 1500m heats tonight at 8.38pm.

The middle-distance runner is also entered in the 800m, with the heats taking place tomorrow at 2.05pm.

Reekie's best outdoor 800m time came just last month with a time of 1:58.27, falling just shy of her indoor record of 1:57.91.

Her last 1500m race came back in May, when she set a time of 4:05.09.

She will go into the 800m heats in good form with a number of sub-two minute runs under her belt this year.

Selection for the games means that athletes must have recorded the Olympic qualifying time in their event. If that has been achieved, a top-two finish in their chosen event this weekend will guarantee selection for Team GB. 

The Women's Olympic qualifying times for 800m and 1500m are 1:59.50 and 4:04.20, respectively, with Jemma comfortably running under the 800m time. 

With her place on Team GB all but guaranteed, she may sit out her favoured event at the trials, but knowing her performances will be an important marker before the Olympic Games come around.

There has been backlash on social media at the fact that this weekend's event will not be televised. But for Jemma, she will will be focusing on the task at hand, and securing her place at Tokyo.
