New paths to improve fitness and help the Garnock Valley heritage are hoped to bring a big boost to tourisms in the Lochshore area.
Plans to construct a new 4km footpath network were approved last month which will see existing paths being upgraded, siting of play equipment and formation of a fitness trim trail.
Information panels will also be erected as well as picnic areas and landscaping works as part of the council plans.
Independent Cllr Donald L Reid said: “I think the plans are marvellous, I’m delighted with what they have come up with in terms of improving the area for tourists and the locals – and the Garnock Rugby club that will be ready next Autumn.
“The plans they have got for the tracks and paths I think it’s fantastic, it really is.
"There has been a heck of a lot of work – the council team have been fantastic.
"It will be great for the area and great for tourism – I’m very positive about the whole thing.
“The Kilbirnie loch, which is the second biggest loch in Ayrshire after Loch Doon, so it’s a big area.
"Eventually they hope for a path right round the loch.
"That will not be for a long time as there’s various different owners – but the other side of the loch will have lots of great walking areas and these areas where folk can stop and do exercise.
"There will be different stations the plans are first class. It’s definitely wonderful for the Garnock Valley”.
North Ayrshire Council plans state: “The current proposals would involve the formation of up to 4km of new or reconstructed paths.
"The terrain and ground conditions vary considerably – some routes already exist in the form of desire lines formed by people walking the Lochside, through fields and woodland areas.
“Others were formed in the 1980s with timber edge kerbs and hard surfaced as part of the steelworks land reclamation project to the south of the loch.
“Significant lengths of these paths have since fallen into disrepair or have become overgrown due to lack of use.
“The proposals also involve the provision of fitness and play facilities along the route in order to enhance the experience.”
