Three Towns residents have been invited to have a go at Curling after the success of Team GB at this year’s Beijing Winter Olympics.

Ardrossan Castle Curling Club was founded in the area almost 185 years ago in 1838, and over the past few years has seen its squad numbers dwindle to only 22 playing members.

The Club are now recruiting new members off the back of Team GB success, where the Men’s team picked up the Silver medal and the women’s team picked up the Gold.

Alex Blair from Ardrossan Castle Curling Club said: “If you enjoyed watching “Team GB’s” success at the winter Olympics and you would like to find out more about Curling, please join us for an informal “Come and Try” session.”

Harvie’s Ice Rink in Saltcoats will host a “Come and Try Curling” event on Monday, March 21 at 6.30pm.

British Curling boss Nigel Holl told Sky Sports that more needed to be done to help more people into curling.

Mr Holl said: “We have got to do something differently from what we did back then, we are hearing, and it is quite hard to tell from Beijing, that the country has totally switched on to curling and loving it.

“My plea to ice rink owners across the UK is buy some curling stones, put some curling sheets down, give people the opportunity to try the game.

“It is a sport for everybody from eight to 80, genuinely.”
