A MAJOR tourism and leisure development that could see the creation of more than 200 holiday homes is being proposed in Ardrossan.
Plans have been submitted to North Ayrshire Council for up to 228 static caravans and a central hub – including a clubhouse with a restaurant/bar lounge, convenience store, hairdresser and swimming pool – on the vacant land at the former Montfode oil storage depot north-west of the town.
The shorefront site, which still retains some derelict buildings and structures from the fuel depot, would also feature a public bowling green, mini golf and a pony/cycle trek.
Applicants Bothwell Land and Development Ltd, who own the 27-acre site off the A78, say it presents “a rare opportunity” for this type of development in the area.
The new coastal destination would be named Ardrossan Eco Village Park, and a design and access statement lodged with the planning application said it “lies within an attractive location”.
It said: “[The holiday homes] will be further furnished by the creation of a central hub for residents, including leisure amenities, opportunities for indoor and outdoor recreation, sport, bar and restaurant facilities.
“A network of footpaths within the site will provide and encourage pedestrian connectivity.
“The development has been designed to prioritise an open and attractive green environment and landscaped setting for residing to avoid over development and cramming.”
A supporting document by agents Idpartnership adds: “The design of the homes will respect the semi-rural nature of the area, be of the highest build quality, and use renewably generated energy techniques at every opportunity to complement the village/small-town aesthetic which has always defined Ardrossan.
“Proposals detailed are for a well-conceived tourism development that maintains and promotes Ardrossan’s integrity as an attractive coastal destination.
“Realising such proposals will generate local employment in necessary infrastructure improvements and construction works.”
A district heat network located within the site is being considered to service the entire development.
