Emergency services were called to Seamill Beach in West Kilbride after reports that an explosive had been found.
Police confirmed that they were in attendance after the discovery of an unexploded "piece of ordanance".
Fire crews were also present on the scene following the reports of the finding.
Sources told the Herald that the path adjacent to the affected area of the beach had been cordoned off, while golfers at the neighbouring West Kilbride Golf Club were not permitted to play the holes which run parallel to the beach.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.05pm on Monday, May 23, we were made aware of a possible unexploded piece of ordnance being found in the Fullerton Drive area, Seamill, West Kilbride.
"Emergency services are in attendance and EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit) has been made aware.
"There is no risk to the wider public.”
However, when the Herald attended the scene at around 4pm, emergency crews had vacated the beach.
The path and golf course were also open to the public and members as usual.
More updates when we have them.
