A CHARITY set up in honour of a former St Matthew’s Academy pupil is about to kick off a jam-packed month of fundraising.
Megan’s Space was launched in 2019 after Megan Copeland, a young woman from Irvine with a bright future and personality, loved by those around her, made the tragic choice to take her own life.
Megan’s story is not unique and in 2019, in the aftermath of her tragic death, Megan’s Space was founded by her parents Jenny and Rob, with the aim of stopping the same thing happening to anyone else.
July was the month of Megan’s birth and for the charity it will now be known as Megan’s Memorial Month (MMM).
Launched in 2021, MMM features a busy events schedule that is unashamedly fun, and has the simple purpose of getting as many people as possible involved, creating as much awareness around the topic as possible and ultimately raising as much money as possible for the cause.
Tens of thousands of pounds have been raised during the month over the past two years - and again the charity is looking to raise vital funds and promote awareness as best they can.
Events begin tomorrow, with four major fundraisers organised.
Saturday, July 8 - Charity Football Tournament
Held at Jack's Park in Saltcoats, the tournament will see five teams of seven compete across 20 minute games to be crowned Magan's Space champions.
Matches begin at 11am, and each played donated £10 to take part in the tournament.
Entry for supporters is from 10.30am and entry is gained via a £2 donation.
Snacks and activities will be available pitch-side and all players and supporters are welcomed back to the Ardrossan Accies function hall from 2pm after the tournament for a celebration where there will be music, a raffle, bottle games and a buffet.
Those wishing to attend are advised to bring cash - and all profits will go to Megan's Space.
Sunday, July 16 - Candlelight Vigil
As the charity have done for the past three years, their candlelight vigil will take place on Megan's birthday from 7pm until dusk.
However, this year the charity say "it is more than just Megan".
They are asking anyone who has lost someone to mental health to come along with a framed photo to commemorate with them and they are hoping to have multiple charities involved.
Megan's Space suggest that you bring a blanket and a candle, however there will be options to buy a candle at the event with profits going back to the charity.
This event is not a fundraiser - though doantions are welcomed.
Friday, July 21 - Quiz Night
Organiser's said: "If you know us, you know we host a great quiz night, so we are hosting another with Gary Copeland."
The event will be held at St Mary's Church Hall in Irvine from 7.30 pm where teams can compete to see who is the most knowledgable in town.
Entry is £10 per person and there is a cap of six people to a team. Each ticket includes a glass of prosecco on arrival.
Prizes will be given for the top three teams and a raffle will also be available.
Light snakcs, teas and coffees will be provided however those in attendance are free to bring their own alcoholic beverages.
Saturday, July 29 - Goatfell Sponsored Climb
Organiser's explained: "Join us as we tackle another 'Megan's Mountiain' together. Last year we climbed Ben Lomond but why not appeciate what is right here on our North Ayrshire doorstep."
Those taking on the climb will be getting the 7am ferry from Ardrossan to Brodick, and are asking those wishing to join them to book this in advance.
They added: "Some like a celebratory drink after breaking a sweat and others just want to head ome. Either is your choice but the more the merrier!"
They kindly ask anyone wishing to join them - unless they have a Megan's Space t-shirt to wear - comes wearing a white t-shirt.
Each participant will be provided with a sponsor sheet, or can use the group's fundraising link.
Those wishing to do their own fundraising are welcome too.
