AN UPDATE has been provided following a huge battery recycling plant fire in Kilwinning.
Emergency crews remain at the scene more than 12 hours after the blaze broke out on Byrehill Place in the Pennyburn area.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were initially called to the scene at 10.05pm on Monday, April 8, to reports of a building fire.
Six fire appliances and a height vehicle were sent to the area where crews remain as they continue to completely extinguish the blaze.
As crews battled the flames through the night it was unclear if any people were injured as a result of the incident.
But the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has said there were no reported casualties.
Three appliances and one height vehicle remained at the scene at 2pm on Tuesday, April 9.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.05pm on Monday, April 8 to reports of a building on fire at Byrehill Place, Kilwinning.
“Operations Control mobilised six fire appliances and one height vehicle to the area with firefighters working to extinguish a fire affecting a recycling centre.
“There are no reported casualties and three appliances and one height vehicle remain at the scene.”
When the fire initially took hold last night the smoke and flames could be seen from far in the distance.
Many residents living nearby reported hearing loud "bangs, pops and explosions" coming from the scene.
Police Scotland closed off Pennyburn Road, near to the scene of the fire.
They also advised those living in the area surrounding the blaze to stay indoors and ensure all windows and doors remained closed.
Pryde - The Playz was also opened as a place of refuge for those who had been evacuated.
Pennyburn Road had reopened by dawn on Tuesday, though Byrehill Place remained closed.
No further update has been provided from Police Scotland at the time of publication.
The Scottish Ambulance Service have also been contacted for comment.
