THE Metro nightclub in Saltcoats is seeking to extend its opening hours.

The famous Hamilton Street venue re-opened in February after an absence of over a decade.

Now under the stewardship of Gary Burns and Stevie Miller, the pair have been looking to return the nightclub to its heyday of the 90s - as well as providing a valuable space for the local community.

And they could move one step closer to doing so next month with an application submitted to North Ayrshire Council licensing bosses which would see major changes coming for the venue's operation.

Since re-opening, The Metro has only been licensed to open until 1am, however the application which is to be heard by the council's licensing board on June 17 seeks to extend these core hours until 2.30am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

The applicants will be hoping that a successful first few months of opening helps their case for the extended hours.

While the proposal also looks for permission to be granted for the club to host a wider array of events.

The application states that the Metro wish to add boxing events, wrestling events such as MMA, live sports screening on TV, bingo, bongos bingo and family fun days to the range of activities the venue can host.

There is one further change proposed as part of the application referring to the access of children and young people to the venue.

The sale of alcohol is not currently permitted at events which can be attended by both under and over 18s.

The Metro bosses are hoping that they will be granted a license to sell alcohol at events, such as family fun days, where young people will be attending alongside adults.

The proposals add that all young people attending will be accompanied by an adult at such events.

This application was submitted on May 3 and will be heard at the licensing board meeting on June 17.

Those wishing to make objections or representations in respect of the application made by The Metro can do so by emailing licensing@north-ayrshire.gov.uk before May 24.
