CONCEPT designs showing potential improvements to Saltcoats Harbour have been revealed to the public.

The doors of Saltcoats Library were opened on Saturday, June 1 to allow locals to look at the designs, which were produced by leading architect Chris Romer-Lee from Studio Octopi.

His assistance has been enlisted by the Splash group, who are also behind proposals to revive the old outdoor swimming pool in Saltcoats.

Group chair Irene Campbell was in attendance at the event alongside the architect to hear what the public think about the concept images.

Six boards were laid out at the event, illustrating the areas of opportunity for developing the 'harbour arm' in Saltcoats.

A final design was then produced showing specifically how a number of these ideas could be implemented.

This was produced in conjunction with the responses provided via a community consultation on potential harbour improvements which was put out to the public at the beginning of the year.

Five areas were identified from this which were targeted within the designs revealed over the weekend.

These were active, shared space, nature, community and heritage - with further details provided within the proposals.

The plans would also see the harbour split into three key zones: one for event space, another for a community hub, and one for a 'harbour park' - somewhere locals could simply enjoy the space.

Suggestions within the designs included, but were not limited to, the renovation of the customs house, the possibility of a sports cage, and celebrating the history of Saltcoats with information boards.

Space is also earmarked for events, such as markets, which could be held on the harbour.

The concept design is not yet a finalised vision for the future of the harbour, but will be used as a diagram to explain the different approaches which could be taken to improve the historic landmark.

A spokesperson said: "The weekend was, once again, a chance for the community to lead in providing feedback on the various themes illustrated and to comment on the desirability of the proposals.

"We will be particularly interested in obtaining responses from all ages, residents and tourists.

"The feedback from the community will be listened to and acted upon, then at the next stage - with input from the council for approvals and budget costings - a comprehensive funded, phased plan will be set out."

The event was an opportunity to obtain an update on the Splash group's project to revive the former outdoor pool in the town.

It is understood that plans are now in place to make it possible to drain the pool, to allow cleaning to take place.

Following this, necessary repairs will be carried out, and it is hoped that the pool will be usable once again by the end of this year.
