PUPILS from Arran High School have had plenty of reason to celebrate after some outstanding national achievement.

The school secured an overall second place finish in the Scottish Schools Mathematician of the Year Competition 2024 in the third and fourth year sections.

It was all thanks to their team of bright youngsters with their talent shining through to earn the school a podium place.

New S3 pupils Harris McCormack and Evie Steel both put in outstanding sowing with joint best scores for their age group in their age category.

Unfortunately both beaten to top spot on the tie break question though it was still an outstanding showing with no one in Scotland topping their scores in the main event.

Allan Wilson, the school's principal teacher of mathematics and numeracy, said: "They are both outstanding mathematicians."

In S4, Faye Godwin also gained a podium finish in the competition by finishing second outright in her age category.

Already this year Faye has bypassed her S4 maths exam, sitting the Higher exam instead, which is really meant for S5/S6 pupils.

She has also sat an additional exam in the form of National 5 Applications of Maths.

Mr Wilson added: "It is clear to see Faye is very gifted in the subject and extremely hard working.  I am glad to see her abilities being recognised nationally."

Second year pupils Nara Wood and Thomas Morgan-Lee, as well as fourth year students Ben McCarthy and Severin Riddell, were also amongst the competitors who displayed outstanding skills to help secure Arran High's second place finish.

Mr Wilson said: "Although not amongst the individual prize winners, they all performed very well and scored well above national average in this elite competition."
