A RANGERS legend is coming to Saltcoats for a special event later this month.

Derek Johnstone will be visiting the Saltcoats Masonic Hall on Sunday, June 30.

The unique event, running from 2pm until 6pm, will see those in attendance get the chance to grab a picture with the Ibrox legend and former Scotland international, as well as to put him on the spot in a Q&A session.

He will also be telling stories of his illustrious career, which included more than 350 appearances for the Glasgow giants in two separate spells over 14 years.

Johnstone first signed for Rangers as a schoolboy, then aged 14, in 1968 before turning professional in 1970.

He made his debut that same year and scored twice in a victory over Cowdenbeath, though his early career will best be remembered for the winning goal he scored in the League Cup final against rivals Celtic just weeks after his debut.

Despite struggling for a regular start, competing with the legendary Colin Stein, in his early years, Johnstone was a starter in the Rangers team who won the European Cup Winners' Cup in Barcelona in 1972.

Following this, he became a mainstay in the side throughout the 1970s and took part in a number of historic campaigns for the club.

He helped end Celtic's nine-year reign as champions of Scotland in 1975, winning the Gers a domestic treble one year later - a fate they repeated just two years later.

Despite submitting a transfer request in 1978, new boss John Greig persuaded Johnstone to stay in Glasgow - despite interest from Arsenal and Tottenham - making him club captain.

A cup double came that same season though that proved to be the high point of the Greig era.

Johnstone would then depart Glasgow for Chelsea in 1983, but he struggled to secure a regular starting berth at Stamford Bridge and after a brief loan spell at Dundee United he returned to Ibrox in 1985.

But he would spend only a year back at the club, and retired from playing in 1987 after a short spell as player-manager at Partick Thistle.

He later carved out a successful career as a radio pundit.

Johnstone's Ibrox career included three top division titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups alongside the Cup Winners' Cup triumph.

As well as quizzing Johnstone on his career, those in attendance at the event will be able to enjoy entertainment from Sie Leslie.

Local Rangers historian David Herd will be there with his new book, while Perfect Memorabilia will have a stall on the day.

Tickets are £20 and are available via Saltcoats Loyal RSC on Facebook or by contacting RobertGibson92@outlook.com.
