The Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Stevenston branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland will celebrate Armed Forces Day next weekend.

The events will start with a service at Saltcoats War Memorial at noon, where all will be welcome.

This will be followed by refreshments in Saltcoats Masonic from 2-6pm, where the Legion hope members of the community will join them for entertainment, karaoke, food and a drink or two.

Entry will be free as a thank you to the community for their support during the branch's Centenary year.

Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Stevenston (SAS) branch president Paul Coffey said: "Armed Forces Day is different than our Remembrance events.

"On Saturday, June 29 we will be celebrating our Armed Forces, what has been achieved in the past, what is being achieved today and the Armed Forces achievers of the future - never forgetting those families and supporters without whom the Armed Forces would surely not have achieved as much."

He added: "The SAS branch has been informed the council budget will not stretch to flowers for our War Memorials, so we are looking at other ways to ensure our memorials are looking great for our community during the summer months. Any help from the public would be welcome."

Last Thursday at the Legion's monthly meeting, Hugh Finnigan stood down as Branch Chairperson and Callum Innes was elected to the role. Hugh has agreed to continue with some of his roles within the branch.

Mr Coffey said: "We thanked Hugh for his hard work in office and look forward to Callum finding his feet. Boab McDougall has also stood down from treasurer and secretary roles. He has worked incredibly hard during his extended time in office since 2018.

"Allan Wright has taken over as treasurer and some secretarial work and we are looking forward to Allan's input.

"Boab is still active within the branch and with our ever-increasing applications has agreed to be our Membership Administration officer - a very important and busy role.

"As per the Legion Scotland Constitution, all office bearers serve on a year-to-year basis, and with applicants not required to be veterans any more this should lead to an exciting future for our branch."
