Scotland's Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop has praised the CalMac crew who rescued a woman from the water after she fell from the Arran ferry.

The crew, assisted by passengers, came to the rescue on Monday, June 10 after the passenger fell from the MV Isle of Arran as it approached Ardrossan. 

At Holyrood began a debate on the ferry service this week, Ms Hyslop said: "I would like to add my personal thanks to the MV Isle of Arran's master and crew for their speedy and professional response during the recent incident when a passenger fell overboard as the vessel approached Ardrossan."

MV Isle of Arran was approaching Ardrossan when the incident happened on the evening of Monday, June 10.

Pasengers on board helped locate the woman in the water. The ferry's rescue craft was quickly launched and the passenger was recovered to safety before being transferred to the care of the emergency services who were waiting at Ardrossan harbour.

She was taken to hospital for treatment. An investigation into the incident will be held.

At the time Craig Ramsay, fleet management director at CalMac Ferries Ltd, said: “As the vessel MV Isle of Arran approached Ardrossan on the evening of Monday June 10, a passenger entered the water.

"They were quickly recovered using the vessel’s rescue craft, following the emergency procedures regularly exercised by the crew.

“An investigation into the circumstances will follow, in line with our protocol in this situation.

"I would like to thank CalMac colleagues and the emergency services for their fast response.”
