SMOKE from a huge fire at a battery recycling plant in Renfrewshire was clearly visible from North Ayrshire on Sunday night.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene of the blaze at an industrial estate in Linwood.;

The smoke plumes were mainly visible from the neighbouring Garnock Valley area, though residents from as far afield as Kilwinning had a view of the smoke.

Commuters using the A737 which connects large parts of the county with Renfrewshire and Glasgow also reported decreased visibility as a result of the blaze.

The incident happened less than three months after a similar blaze destroyed a battery recycling plant in Kilwinning in April.

At its peak, 10 appliances were sent to the Linwood blaze, on the town's Burnbrae Road.

Locals close to the incident also reported hearing "explosions" as the fire broke out at WEEE Solutions on Sunday night.

The company was acquired by recycling and resource recovery firm Enva in January.

The latest update on the incident was provided by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) on Monday, June 24, morning.

Six appliances and two height vehicles remain at the scene as crews work to extinguish the fire. There are no reported casualties at present.

Local residents in the area are being advised to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.

While motorists travelling through the area are being urged to  keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.

Area commander David Murdoch from the SFRS said: “We continue to work with the recycling centre and partner agencies to minimise the disruption to the local community and will continue to provide updates.

“While smoke continues to be visible, we would ask that residents remain indoors and keep windows and doors closed as a precaution.

“If travelling through smoke, motorists should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.”

Judith Moore, SEPA's national duty manager, added: “Following initial reports on Sunday evening of a significant fire at Linwood Industrial Estate, Paisley, SEPA officers deployed and worked across the night to support SFRS as part of a multi-agency response.

“SEPA officers remain in attendance at the site of WEEE Solutions Ltd, a specialist waste electrical and battery recycling treatment facility at Burnbrae Road.

“Residents are urged to continue to follow the SFRS for the latest information and advice.

“Environmental impacts can be reported at sepa.org.uk/report.”

Police Scotland have also reported local road closures affecting Linwood, with Burnbrae Road shut off at the Linclive Interchange junction, just off the A737.

Firefighters tackling the Fenix blaze in Kilwinning in April remained on site for four days damping down the flames and making the site safe.
