A Kilwinning man has been jailed after crashing and flipping a quad bike in the middle of the night.

Logan Creighton, 28, of Claremont Crescent, pleaded guilty at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court following the incident on June 21 last year.

He was charged with driving an unregistered quad bike "without due care and attention", at excessive speeds, and colliding with a pile of soil, causing the quad bike to roll over.

He was also charged with using the unregistered quad bike without insurance.

The court was told how the red Honda quad bike was being driven at speed on the town's St Winnings Road at around 2.20am.

The fiscal depute said it clipped a large pile of soil at the side of the road, which sent the quad bike flipping and rolling, injuring the rider.

Creighton left the scene without contacting police.

The vehicle was reported to police around five hours later as being upturned in the middle of the road with blood around it.

Officers attended Crosshouse Hospital and were told that a patient had presented himself and had told staff he had crashed a quad bike.

Creighton had already left the hospital by then, but police found him getting on a bus, where he admitted what happened.

Creighton's solicitor told the court that her client was already serving a 42-month sentence for separate matters and wasn't due to be eligible for release until August 2025.

She said that he knew it was a "foolish and utterly stupid decision" and that he had been "extremely careless".

Sheriff George Jamieson initially imposed a fine of £1,000, but then granted a request from Creighton's solicitor for the alternative of 28 days in prison, on top of the sentence he's currently serving.

Six penalty points were also added to Creighton's licence.
