A Saltcoats mum who is facing eviction while fighting cancer has been promised support from North Ayrshire Council.

May Craig, 77, and her son John were warned they would have to vacate their home in Springvale Street as the landlord was selling the property.

They were told they would get emergency council accommodation elsewhere in the Three Towns.

But with May battling cancer, she feared losing easy access to her local doctors and support network if she had to leave Saltcoats.

Now, after being contacted by the Herald, North Ayrshire Council have said they will do their best to find suitable accommodation in her area of preference.

Before the council statement, son John, 55, said: “I gave up my job last year to look after mum. Then we were given a month's notice to leave the property because the landlords was selling up.

“That left us homeless at the same time as mum is fighting cancer and having to regularly attend the Beatson Institute.

“We told the council we would need a bedroom downstairs and in Saltcoats, so my mother has easy access to her doctor. At the moment, I am having to carry her downstairs when she goes for treatment.

“But the council told us we would be offered a property 'somewhere in the Three Towns', rather than Saltcoats. I fear that could severely affect my mother's condition.“

However, in a statement today, a North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “While we don’t generally comment on individual cases, we are aware of the Craigs’ situation and are endeavouring to support them much as possible.

“We will strive to provide suitable accommodation in their area of preference, taking into account availability within North Ayrshire’s temporary accommodation portfolio.”

On hearing the news, John said: “That's great. I'm so glad to hear that. It will make a real difference to mum.“
