Ferry crossings to Arran face cancellation today because of strong winds and sea swell conditions.

CalMac have already confirmed that sailings have been cancelled between Ardrossan and Brodick after 4.40pm today (Wednesday, August 21).

And they warned that earlier sailings could also be cancelled.

A review of the conditions will take place around 1pm.

Sailings between Troon and Brodick are also on high alert and could face cancellation too, the company confirmed.

A weather warning is in place across Scotland's west coast from 11am today until 8am on Thursday.

The warning is for heavy rain, but winds gusting to 40-50mph are also forecast for the Firth of Clyde from lunchtime today onwards.

A spokesperson said: "Due to adverse weather of strong winds and sea swell conditions, the following sailings are cancelled: Depart Ardrossan: 6pm, depart Brodick: 4.40pm and 7.20pm.

"A review will be made at approximately 1pm for the 1.55pm sailing from Brodick and  3.20pm from Ardrossan, which are at heightened risk of disruption.

"Timber and livestock will be accepted on morning sailings and on a case by case basis this afternoon.

"Morning sailings remain liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice.

"Tomorrow, due to the vessel berthing overnight in Brodick, the 7am departing Ardrossan is cancelled."

For the Troon to Brodick service, they added: "Due to adverse weather conditions, this service is liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice."

CalMac said: "Disrupting a sailing is a decision we do not take lightly because we know it will inconvenience our customers and the communities we serve.

"However, the safety of our customers and crew must come first.

"In this instance, the Master of the vessel has judged it is necessary in response to the assessment of adverse weather conditions.

"We’ll keep customers informed should there be any further changes in connection to this route.
