North Ayrshire Council have given the green light to an extension at the Orangery restaurant in West Kilbride.

The planning documents submitted with the application reveal that the hotel's restaurant would get a new decking along with the extension.

As reported last year, the long-established West Kilbride hotel has been acquired from the Sweeney family by the RAD Group after three decades.

Their application stated: "It is proposed to erect a single storey extension which would enlarge the Orangery Restaurant, facing onto the gardens and the Firth of Clyde.  It would extend the restaurant area by a minimum of 2m to the rear over a distance of 15.6m.

"It would have a flat roof, some 4.78m in height, to match the existing orangery design, with an additional roof lantern at the northern end.

"The rear elevation would be glazed with full height windows and doors. In addition, a new raised deck would be formed alongside the extension.

"From the deck, there would be rear access to the gardens from a set of stairs."

In rubber-stamping the proposal, NAC Planning Officer Iain Davies said:  "In terms of scale the proposed extension would be small in relation to the existing hotel complex both in terms of area and height.

"The rear grounds of the hotel are generous in size and there is sufficient space for the proposed extension to be erected without resulting in overdevelopment of the grounds.

"The design of the proposed extension has been devised to match the existing design of the orangery both in terms of fenestration and materials.

"The raised patio would be located in landscaped gardens and would appear as part of the gardens.

"The proposed extension would be located in the centre of the hotel grounds and would not be located close to any neighbouring properties.

"Therefore, it is not considered that the extension or raised deck could result in any amenity impacts on neighbouring properties. In terms of its use, the proposed extension would provide an extension to the existing restaurant space within the hotel. Such a use is consistent with the established use of the hotel and therefore does not raise any new land use planning considerations.

As reported last year, the long-established West Kilbride hotel has been acquired from the Sweeney family by the RAD Group after three decades.

It is the ninth venue for the company within the group, as they also operate the Lochside Hotel near New Cumnock, Dalmeny Park in Barrhead, the Royal Hotel in Cumnock, the Carlton Hotel in Prestwick, Hetland Hall near Dumfries, and the Radstone in Larkhall.
