THE charity behind plans to create a Mosque in Ardrossan have unveiled proposals for a second project in Ayrshire.

In March of last year, we revealed that the Al-Farooq Education and Community Centre (AFECC) had begun fundraising to create a Muslim place of worship in North Ayrshire - in what would be a first for the area.

The Glasgow-based charity purchased the former Barony St John’s Church and were, and still are, looking to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for its renovation.

Now, whilst the Ardrossan project remains ongoing, the AFECC have taken on a second venue within Ayrshire.

The charity have purchased a vacant property in James Street, Ayr, which was formerly the home of the town's Railway Club.

As with their project at the former Church of Scotland building in Ardrossan, a fundraising campaign has now began to support the creation of Ayr's first Mosque.

AFECC say that they are looking to raise around £149,000 to complete the project.

A spokesperson said: "AFECC is proud to announce the purchase of a property to serve the growing Muslim community in Ayr.

"To make this project a reality, we need to raise additional funds. The Muslim population in Ayr has steadily increased, creating a strong need for a dedicated space for prayer and community activities.

"Currently, the community gathers for prayer in a hall above a shop, which can only accommodate 70-80 people.

"With nearly 100 local Muslim families from diverse backgrounds, there’s a significant number who lack a proper place for worship and community connection.

"This new property, conveniently located near the town centre, will provide a space for prayer and community gatherings."

There are currently only two Mosques in Ayrshire, located in Cumnock and Kilmarnock - both in East Ayrshire.
