A STEVENSTON man with a “horrendous record” cornered a woman in the doorway of a Glasgow nightclub before brandishing a glass bottle.
James Donaldson, 36, was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to two charges.
He admitted assaulting a woman and having an offensive weapon.
The court heard that the woman had been sitting on the steps outside of the Polo Lounge on Wilson Street at 3.55pm on August 29, 2021, when she saw Donaldson and two other men passing by.
Donaldson, of Reid Avenue, and the other men returned a short time later and a disagreement broke out between the group and the woman.
Donaldson confronted the woman. He then cornered her in the doorway of the Polo Lounge before charging at her brandishing a glass bottle in his hand.
This forced the woman to retreat along Wilson Street.
Donaldson then ran away from the area and the woman contacted police.
Officers made enquiries into the incident and traced Donaldson on September 4, 2021. He was cautioned and charged.
Donaldson’s lawyer told the court that his client had “turned a corner in his life”.
The defence solicitor said: “These offences are over three years old. He does have a terrible record.
"He has made significant and positive changes in the last two and a half years.
“He has engaged with addiction services and is drug-free now and has been for some time. Mr Donaldson has not committed any offences for two and a half years.
“He has demonstrated that he has turned a corner in his life.”
Addressing Donaldson’s lawyer, Sheriff Patricia Pryce stated: “His record is horrendous. This is a serious matter.
“He brandished a bottle at a woman and still requires to be punished. He is a man who up until three or four years ago had an exceptional record for violence.
“I recognise the good progress he has made. It is lovely to see but he still requires to be punished.”
Sheriff Pryce placed Donaldson on a community payback order with 120 hours of unpaid work.
