AN APP that encourages people to bin litter responsibly across North Ayrshire and the whole of the UK has seen a doubling in recorded throwaways month-on-month.
The LitterLotto app, which is facilitated by the Keep Scotland Beautiful charity and provided by North Ayrshire Council and its partners, offers rewards to encourage people to bin litter responsibly.
A monthly prize and weekly jackpots enable users to "bin it to win it".
A monthly cash prize of £100 is available in North Ayrshire, and users can get another entry into a UK-wide weekly jackpot of £1,000 every time they bin responsibly.
Throughout August, users binned 8,630 pieces of rubbish – up from 4,942 in July.
Councillor Tony Gurney, cabinet member for green environment and economy, said: "I am delighted that the app is continuing to go from strength to strength here in North Ayrshire, and I would encourage everyone who cares about our local environment to download the app.
"As a local authority, we have been promoting the app on the side of our bin lorries and on our public street bins to ensure as many people as possible know about it.
"And we have used regular social media updates to keep our communities informed about how they can get involved.
"If you already use the app – please tell your friends and family about it."
To participate in prize draws, users who have downloaded the app need to take a photograph on their smartphone device as they place their litter into a council street litter bin.
They then wait to discover if they are one of the randomly selected monthly prize draw winners.
All types of litter count, and the prize draw can be entered as many times as desired.
App user Kathryn Strang Sloan, from Irvine, was the £100 winner for August.
She found out about the app through a friend, and is using the money to treat herself to a relaxing spa day.
The LitterLotto app can be downloaded at litterlotto.com or through the app store.
Participants must be aged 13 or over, and prizes for users under 18 must be claimed through a parent or legal guardian.
