PLANS to change the use of an historic Beith hotel have been given the go ahead by North Ayrshire Council.

Proposals to turn the Saracen's Head Hotel, which dates back to the early 1700s, into a house in multiple occupation (HMO) were approved by the planning authority late last month.

An HMO is a property rented out by at least three people who are not from one traditional 'household' - for example a family.

The plans for the Saracen's Head were first lodged back in July, and proved controversial with many locals.

More than 20 objections were made in regards to the proposals via the council's online planning portal.

One objector stated: "I believe the addition of an HMO to Beith would further stress the surrounding community in regards to parking, health services and local employment."

While others added that the historic value of the Saracen's Head should be maintained for the town.

However, the plans were granted approval with no attached conditions.

A decision notice said: "The proposal complies with the relevant provisions of the development plan and there are no other material considerations that indicate otherwise.

"This is determined following an assessment which has had regard to the provisions of the development plan, so far as material to the application, and to any other material considerations."

Permission has now been granted to applicant Murray Thomson to change the current layout of the venue to allow the creation of an HMO containing 10 bedrooms.

In a change from the current ground floor layout, the function and pool area would be become a lounge room.

One current storage area, as well as what is currently the female toilets, will be converted into bedrooms.

Another, smaller, storage area would be transformed into a bathroom and what is the male toilets at present is set to become a laundry room. The existing accessible toilet is to remain in its current form.

One lounge area will remain as is, though the current bar and lounge section is to be converted into a kitchen and dining room.

The first floor is set for wholesale changes with plans detailing a number of adjustments. This floor will comprise five bedrooms and three separate bathrooms.

Only a handful of changes are to take place on the second floor which would include three bedrooms and one bathroom.
