A HEARTBROKEN Dalry mum is making it her mission to turn her own devastating loss into a charity win.

Joanne Mccall's son, Alexander, passed away in February this year at the age of 34.

Alexander had been diagnosed with type one diabetes before he had even turned two-years-old and battled with the disease throughout the majority of his life.

It was complications from the very same disease which took his father's life in 1991, only one month before Alexander received his own diagnosis.

With many other members of Joanne's family also diagnosed with diabetes, she has decided that the time is now right to do her bit for a charity that helps those affected by the disease, Diabetes UK.

She explained: "In 1991 my son's father passed away with diabetic complications and exactly one month later my son was diagnosed with type one diabetes at 23 months. It was horrible so soon after his father passing away.

"Alexander grew up with injections four times a day, it was hard but we all coped even when he was in and out hospital.

"When he was a young teenager he was hardly in hospital but over the last few years he was in and out hospital again. In February this year my son passed away and it absolutely devastated us all.

"I knew I wanted to do something, so my family have all helped me to organise a sponsored walk in memory of Alexander."

The walk will be taking place on Sunday, October 27, with around 20 participants taking place in the trek from Castle Semple in Lochwinnoch to Johnstone and back - a distance of around 10.5 miles.

Joanne herself will be among those taking part despite her requiring the use of a wheelchair.

She added: "A few weeks ago my niece was in ICU with her diabetes, as well as my cousin, so diabetes is so important to all our family.

"I just want to raise awareness and for people to understand the dangers but for the public to understand that some people can live a normal life.

"I could not have done this without the support of my husband and my family. We are just hoping to raise as much money as we can.

"Diabetes has been a big part of my life and it's something my husband myself and two daughters are very passionate about."

Events will continue following the walk, with further plans in place to host a charity karaoke and disco night in April next year.

Joanne also intends to have her head shaved that evening as she continues on her charity mission.
