Residents in Stevenston welcomed Glasgow City Council’s decision in 2004 to completely close down the open campus at Kerelaw School and scrap plans for a new secure unit.
Police had attributed a large number of incidents in Stevenston to youngsters from the school. In later years, a number of staff at the school would be jailed for shocking crimes of abuse.
