EMERGENCY roadworks in West Kilbride led to 'gridlock' for motorists early on Thursday afternoon.

A water burst occurred in Snowdon Terrace sparking long tailbacks for motorists, with West Kilbride having already been inundated with roadworks during the past year.

One of the motorists caught up in the congestion was Jamie Black from Largs, who said he was unable to get answers from the authorities on the traffic jam throughout the area which had resulted in the long queues.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Scottish Water operatives were called to deal with a burst on a water main in Snowdon Terrace, Seamill, West Kilbride.

"The water main has now been repaired and temporary traffic lights will remain in place until the road has been fully reinstated. They will be removed as soon as it is safe to do so.

“A technician is now on site to carry out manual control of the temporary traffic lights and help keep traffic moving.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank everyone affected for their patience and understanding.”
