A LEGENDARY fundraiser who has been collecting donations for the Crosshouse Children's Fund for over a decade is to step aside after this year.

Kilwinning man Michael Kirkum has made the decision that 2024 will be his final year collecting for the charity over both the Christmas and Easter periods.

This year's Christmas campaign is already under way and Michael is hopeful that he will be able to bow out on a high.

Despite his 14 years of fundraising efforts coming to an end - for health reasons - he is hopeful his son, Michael Jnr, will "pick up the torch".

He said: "Due to health reasons I’m afraid to say this is my final year collecting for charity. I’ve been blessed with support over the last 14 years.

"Times are getting tougher for everyone and I think charity begins at home. We are all facing challenges and although charity needs your support I think it’s time we looked after our own families."

Following his announcement, Michael was quick to thank all those who have supported his efforts over the years.

He added: "Over the years I have seen many changes. Businesses are closing at an alarming rate, cost of living is through the roof, health issues are climbing and to get a doctors appointment well that’s another story.

"I would like to thank all those people who have given there money to my appeals and through your generosity over 33,000 local children have benefited from those donations. Thank you does not cover it. There are too many people to thank but you know who you are.

"Every thing comes to an end. Here’s hoping for a bumper year to end on. It’s been amazing but at least I can get my house back to normal after Christmas and Easter.

"I hope you continue to support Michael Kirkum Jnr as without these appeals many children would not receive a gift at Easter or Christmas."

Despite the announcement, Michael's appeal for this year is still very much active.
