PLANS to replace and revamp the ATM at Arran's only bank have been approved.
The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) on Invercloy Road will soon see the installation of a new, modernised cash machine.
The proposal, which was greenlit by North Ayrshire Council on November 1, involves updating the existing ATM to improve its functionality and accessibility.
The new machine will also come with a purple bezel surround, matching current corporate standards.
Situated in the village centre, the bank is noted for its architectural features, including red sandstone and sash windows.
The façade alterations are focused solely on the area around the ATM and are designed to avoid impacting any original materials or the building’s stylistic cohesion.
Installation of the new machine is expected to have minimal impact on the historical character of the building, which is a Category C listed structure.
The bank building was added to the Historic Environment Scotland register in 1994. It was built back in the early 20th century out of red ashlar sandstone.
The council's decision to approve the proposal was based on its compliance with the North Ayrshire Development Plan Policy 10, which stresses minimal impact on the building's character.
The replacement ATM aligns with the general urban area zoning in Brodick, and the project’s 'like for like' approach has been deemed appropriate for preserving the character of listed buildings.
In the past, the building has been subject to previous applications, including signage approvals in 2023.
This branch became the only bank left on the island after the Bank of Scotland closed its Brodick location on January 31, 2024.
It's decision notice, issued by North Ayrshire Council’s Chief Planning Officer, confirms that the listed building consent is granted based on compliance with conservation requirements and a minimal intervention approach.
The project, situated in Brodick’s town centre, aims to enhance accessibility for residents and visitors without altering the village’s heritage feel.
