TRIBUTES have poured in following the death of one of the Three Towns' most familiar faces.

The family of Alex Tulloch announced on Monday, November 12, that the much-loved local had sadly passed away at the age of 85.

The term 'football legend' is often reserved for those who played at the top of the game, however, no words better encapsulate the influence Alex had on the sport across the Three Towns.

Back in 1984, the Saltcoats man was one of the founding members of youth football club TASS Thistle.

In the 40 years since then, the club has grown to become one of the finest grassroots clubs across the whole of Scotland.

Thousands of local youngsters have thrived and enjoyed the beautiful game as part of the set up - allowing many to move into the professional game, the most notable of late being Billy Gilmour.

Alex, who served as club chairman, was a driving force throughout the club's years to date - showing no desire to stop even as he entered his later years.

He worked tirelessly to provide young children with an opportunity to play football in a fun and safe environment and thanks to Alex’s hard work the club has continued to be successful and grow - and will undoubtedly continue to in the future.

The time Alex spent speaking with parents and helping them become club volunteers and coaches created a platform for TASS - with his dedication as a volunteer hailed on a number of occasions.

In 2014 he was named winner of the People’s Award at the Scottish FA Grassroots Awards, receiving the gong from Scottish footballing hero Kenny Dalglish and then national team boss Gordon Strachan.

Speaking at the time, Dalglish described Alex as "an incredible inspiration" adding that he was "an extraordinary grassroots volunteer who goes above and beyond".

Alex received further recognition for his efforts in 2021 when he was named as a coaching and volunteering champion by sportscotland.

Following his passing, many have moved to pay tribute and recall fond memories of Alex.

His son, Paul, said: "It is with with great sadness that I have to let you know of the passing of my dad, Alex Tulloch.

"He will be greatly missed by his family and anyone who got the pleasure to meet and spend time with him.

"I hope - like us - you have shared stories, laughed, chatted and enjoyed his company and have many memories to treasure."

Paying tribute, one former TASS player commented: "Alex has been a massive influence throughout my life and he was a huge support through the many highs and lows personally.

"He will always hold a very special place in my heart. He was a wonderful man and gentleman who was loved by many."

While the parent of another added: "He was a one in a million, Mr TASS himself, I was privileged to know and spend many a laugh on the sidelines with him.

"He started us on our TASS journey and will be missed by his TASS family and all who knew him."
