AN INVESTIGATION into Police Scotland's handling of the death of Saltcoats man Alan Lawson has now concluded.

Force watchdog, the Police Investigation and Review Commissioner (PIRC), was instructed to launch the probe by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) on March 6 - exactly one month after the 36-year-old's death.

A report detailing their findings was completed in August and has now been submitted.

A spokesperson for the PIRC said: “Following our investigation, a report was submitted to Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service on August 21, 2024.”

The COPFS has confirmed that this report has been received and will now be used as part of the investigation into the wider circumstances of Mr Lawson’s death.

No further details on action taken as a result of the report's findings have been disclosed at this stage.

Mr Lawson died in hospital on February 6, this year, after officers were called to a property on New England Road - where he was found injured - two days earlier.

He was found after after an alleged serious assault at an address on Alexander Avenue, Largs, on February 3.

The day following his passing, Police Scotland confirmed that they were treating Mr Lawson's death as murder.

In the weeks that followed the investigation's launch, two men were arrested and appeared in court in connection with the incident.

Largs man Jordan Honeyman, 30, made no plea in relation to charges of murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice when he appeared at a private hearing in Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on February 20. Mr Honeyman has since been remanded in custody.

Bryan Carey, 28, then appeared at a private hearing within the same court on February 28 - making no plea to one charge of attempting to defeat the ends of justice. The Ardrossan man was released on bail.

The pair are set to appear in the High Court at a later date to face the charges once again.
