Beith's Jemma Reekie will be going to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, it's been confirmed.
The 24-year-old middle-distance runner was one of the 33-strong athletics squad named by Team Scotland on Friday, July 1, confirming 22 additional names to the list of 11 previously selected athletes.
Now the Garnock Valley athlete can look forward in her efforts to kick in from her impressive olympic performance in the Tokyo 2020 (took place in 2021) Olympic Games.
Reekie came fourth in the 800m event, coming agonisingly close to securing a spot on the podium and one of those elusive medals.
She is the only Ayrshire athlete in the team's athletics squad, and will be competing across both the 800m and 1,500m track events in Birmingham.
She goes into the games in fine form also, having become UK champion for 800m on days ago, June 26, at the UK Athletics Championships.
In doing so, she secured her spot on the plane to Eugene, where she will compete for Great Britain and Ireland at the World Athletics Championship.
It'll be a first Commonwealth Games for Reekie, who was only 20 when the last event took place in Australia's Gold Coast in 2018.
The Team Scotland athletics squad for Birmingham is led by team manager Julie Mollison and head coach Mark Pollard.
Mark said: “Being picked for Scotland for a Commonwealth Games is always an exciting moment and we congratulate athletes, their coaches and their families on selection."
Jemma is a Kilbarchan ACC athlete, and she and her family still live in Beith.
Mark continued: "We acknowledge, too, the huge role played by numerous Scottish clubs in the development of these athletes over a number of years.
“It bears repetition on these occasions that success in athletics isn’t achieved overnight or anything like it.
"In so many cases, this is the culmination of many years of hard work, good coaching and development work by clubs along the pathway.”
