EGLINTON FC are aiming for promotion this season, according to co-manager William Shearer.
The Kilwinning-based outfit are entering only their third season in the West of Scotland Football League (WoSFL) - but Shearer has high ambitions for the campaign ahead.
The co-boss, who takes charge of the side alongside Dougie Taylor, has been a massive part of the club's journey to date.
Shearer first joined the club when they were a Kilwinning under 15 side, who played in the youth ranks until the under 21 age group.
They then moved into the amateur ranks as Kilwinning Rangers AFC, before opting to join the WoSFL set up as the newly formed Eglinton FC.
Playing out of Kilwinning Sports Club, the outfit have played two years in the set-up's bottom Fourth Division - and Shearer says he feels they are now in a place to make a real impact on the league.
He commented: “When we took the jump I felt as though we were still a boys team a wee bit, the first season was more about finding our feet and seeing where we were at.
“The second season, I had been doing everything, chairman, secretary, treasurer, coach and manager. I had people asking to get involved with the club but it had to be the right people – so that’s what we done.
“The group of guys have been great, they’ve pushed us off the field and we’ve built up a really good, hard working committee.
“Last season was all about that, trying to get the off-the-field stuff sorted.”
And it is fair to say signs have been positive to start this season with Eglinton opening their campaign with a pair of victories.
First up was a midweek fixture at home to Easterhouse FA, which ended in a 4-2 win for the Kilwinning side.
Shearer said: “It’s a strange league, it’s different challenges and there’s not a bad team in the league.
“It was a good result against Easterhouse. We went 2-0 within seven minutes but then we took the foot off the gas a wee bit and let them back into it.
“They had a good period. We started the second half slow, but we rang the changes and got a comfortable win in the end.”
The club then followed the result up on Saturday by defeating Carluke Rovers 3-1 away from home.
Shearer added: “Saturday away to Carluke, which is always a tough place to go, I feel as if we played our best football of the two games.
“They had some good chances and our keeper had some good saves but apart from that we were well on top. It was a really good game to watch from our side of things. It’s been two really good games after a good pre-season.”
Now, the co-boss feels everything is coming together for an impressive season as Eglinton FC continue on their ambitious journey.
Shearer continued: “This season is now about what we can do on the field. We brought in nine players in the off season.
“They’re quality players, a good mix of experienced amateur players and players that have came from under 20s.
“It’s completely transformed the squad, along with the players we kept from last season who are totally focused on what we need to do.
“Our object is to try and get promotion, and to try get a few more people through the gate.”
Next up for Eglinton is a trip to face Kello Rovers on Saturday, August 10, with kick off at 2pm.
