BEITH Juniors boss Chris Strain is looking for consistency after his side put in their "best" performance of the season on Saturday.
The Mighty put in an outstanding showing which saw them climb up the West of Scotland Football League Premier Division table as they picked up a 2-0 win over Johnstone Burgh at Keanie Park.
First half goals from Ben Lewis and Andy Monk set Beith well on their way, and an astute defensive performance ensured there was no route back into the game for Murdo Mackinnon's men.
“It was a good performance, we’re gradually improving," Strain said.
"The results have probably been a bit more inconsistent than we would like but in terms of performances we’re getting where we want to be.
“Saturday was probably the best that it’s been in terms of attitude, aggression and commitment - the way we want to play.
“We won and won comfortably in the end – I think it’s a good reference point for us for the rest of the season.
“It’s the levels we want to be reaching and that’s what we are capable of when we do reach those heights.”
The win propelled Beith up to sixth place in the league standings, with the back-to-back champions now within seven points of early season leaders Clydebank - who have yet to drop any points.
Strain hopes that Saturday's win can be the start of a run of results which could ultimately help them cut the deficit on Gordon Moffat's outfit.
He said: “The most consistent team at this point is Clydebank. They’ve built up a decent lead on the teams around them because everyone has been cutting each other’s throat.
“It’s consistency that’s the key, for us it’s about putting a run together.
“Every game is very difficult, now we need to follow up with the same kind of performance or it renders that one meaningless.
“We know the importance of what we have to do, we have shown we are capable of it in the past, the boys know what is required – it’s just about us getting the head down and picking the games off one by one.”
Despite looking just one game ahead at the moment, Strain admitted there is a long term target in mind if The Mighty are to be title challengers yet again this season.
He added: “We’ve played eight games and we’ve taken maximum points in four of those.
“You need to probably make sure you are winning at least 75 per cent of your games – and that’s over the course of the full season.
“Clydebank won’t go through the full season undefeated, they will drop points, you just have to be in a position to capitalise when that does happen.
“You just have to win games, no matter how we go about it. We’re really making strides at this moment in time and I’m pleased with where the players are at.
“Short term it’s about winning games and medium term we will see where that takes us.”
Next up for Beith is more league action, as they travel to face Troon at Portland Park on Saturday, October 5, with kick off at 2pm.
